In the early days, Claregalway GAA Club didn't have any dedicated playing facilities and the club relied on the generousity of local land owners to provide them with a field to play their games.

This changed in the late 1970s when some members got together to seek out land. About 1978, the club purchased its own grounds in Claregalway. Located in the townland of Lakeview the 7.5 acres of ground is in an ideal location. At this location is our full sized main pitch and a smaller training/juvenile pitch. Situated beside the club grounds are dressing rooms which were built in the mid nineties. This has two dressing rooms and a large meeting room. There are also further temporary changing facilities located beside the grounds. A community centre was also built on the same piece of land, and that is run by and independent committee.

The Claregalway National School, Claregalway Educate Together national school and Coláiste Bhaile Chláir secondary school all use our grounds for games and sports. A very popular local Naoinra runs is situated in the clubhouse during weekdays. The grounds are maintained by the Club, in addition to help from local FAS workers.

With the increasing population came the pressure on grounds and this lead to a need for more playing areas. During the 2004-2007 era the club arranged with member Jarlath Brennan to rent a piece of land from him in Cregboy. It was suitable for use by some of our underage teams.

In 2003, the Galway Football Board purchased and developed county training grounds in Loughgeorge, Claregalway (behind the Central Tavern). They have since allowed our younger teams (U-8,9,10) access to train there on Sunday mornings.

From the North West

During the 2000s a very active Club Development Committee were attempting to identify some extra land. The main pitch is in need of development and the Club still needed access to more land for playing pitches.

In 2009 the Club managed to source 20.1 acres of land in the north part of the Community, in the townland of Knockdoemore. The land was purchased during the year, and work began there in January 2010.  The ambitious plans have space for three full size pitches, one all-weather pitch, large dressing rooms and car park.

Kdmore Pitch No.1 21.7.2011The first pitch in Knockdoe came into use in 2012 and the 2nd in 2013  while at the back of the grounds a training pitch is also in use. The main entrance has over 300m of stone wall and pillars, car park is in use and there were temporary cabins for changing rooms were in place.

In March 2015 a new Dressing Room/Sports Centre was compleded on Knockdoemore opened for full use in Apr.

Location

Claregalway lies in County Galway in the West of Ireland. Galway City lies just 10km away, while Tuam, Oranmore, Atnery and Headford are also within short distances. The village is located at the junction of the busy N18 (Limerick-Sligo) and N-17 (Galway-Sligo) routes. Once a quiet village, it is now infamous over as a traffic bottleneck. The parish takes in the areas of Claregalway and Carnmore.

Our main grounds are located less than 1km from the village church. Take the N-18 by the church, past the national school and take the next left. The grounds are located beside the Leisure Centre.
